Health Report Reaches Parliament Secretariat Over PM Shah’s Use of Sunglasses

Kathmandu: A medical report concerning Prime Minister Balen Shah’s use of dark sunglasses during parliamentary proceedings has been submitted to the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

According to Ekram Giri, joint secretary and spokesperson of the Parliament Secretariat, a letter accompanied by Shah’s eye examination report has been received by the secretariat.

The issue emerged after Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal (DP) said that anyone wishing to wear dark sunglasses inside Parliament for health reasons would need to provide medical documentation.

Shah underwent an eye examination at Chhauni Hospital on August 22. The examination reportedly found that exposure to bright light with the naked eye could cause difficulties, following which doctors recommended the use of dark sunglasses. The related medical report was sent to the Parliament Secretariat on August 26.

Meanwhile, Shah is scheduled to participate in a direct question-and-answer session with lawmakers at the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Eleven lawmakers have registered questions for the prime minister.

Under the House of Representatives Rules, lawmakers seeking to question the prime minister must submit written details of their questions to the Speaker at least three days before the meeting.

Accordingly, lawmakers were given until September 5 to register their questions, and 11 members submitted questions within the deadline.

The rules provide for the direct question-and-answer session to be held during the first hour of a designated parliamentary meeting. The proceedings may also be broadcast live through government and other media outlets.

With the medical report now submitted to the Parliament Secretariat, Prime Minister Shah is expected to attend Wednesday’s session wearing dark sunglasses on medical grounds.
