Dr. Govinda KC Launches 24th Hunger Strike Against Balen Government



Kathmandu, July 23: Senior orthopedic surgeon and medical education reform campaigner Dr. Govinda KC has begun his 24th hunger strike, accusing the Balen Shah-led government of ignoring his long-standing demands for reforms in Nepal's medical education sector.

The hunger strike began on Thursday at the Krishna Temple Dharamshala in LN Chowk, Dhangadhi, according to his aide, Dr. Amrit Jaisi.

Dr. KC said he was forced to resume his protest after the government failed to address his demands despite a deadline that expired on July 21. He accused the government of acting in the interests of private medical college operators rather than protecting deserving students and ensuring transparency in medical education.

Among his key demands are the cancellation of appointments made to the Medical Education Commission, including those related to Dasharath Chand Medical University, which he claims involve conflicts of interest. He also called for the withdrawal of decisions to reduce scholarship quotas and increase student seats in private medical colleges without meeting the required standards and infrastructure.

Dr. KC further criticized the government's decision to operate the Geta institution as a university instead of a health sciences academy, alleging that the move was influenced by vested interests.

He said his protest aims to ensure transparency, protect scholarships for deserving students, improve the quality of medical education, and end political interference in the sector.
