Rasuwa Flood: 10 Bodies Recovered from Tunnels in a Single Day

Rasuwa, September 16. Search and rescue teams have recovered 10 bodies in a single day from tunnels at different hydropower projects in Rasuwa following the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River.

Four bodies and a human body part were recovered from the powerhouse area of the Chilime Hydropower Project during excavation and search operations, according to Dipesh Rijal, Assistant Chief District Officer of Rasuwa.

The search operation is being carried out under the leadership of the Nepali Army, with the participation of the Armed Police Force, Nepal Electricity Authority personnel and the Indian Army.

The flood that struck the Bhotekoshi River on August 26 swept away buildings and walls inside the Chilime Hydropower Project premises and blocked the tunnel. Despite the difficult conditions, the rescue team has continued searching inside the tunnel for missing workers.

Kamala Bahadur Kharel, senior assistant at the hydropower project, said six employees—a engineer, two supervisors, two security guards and an office assistant—were working the morning shift on the day of the flood.

The Nepali Army has also kept a helicopter on standby at Dhunche, the district headquarters, to support the rescue operation and facilitate the evacuation of employees who may still be trapped inside the tunnel.

Meanwhile, five more bodies were recovered from the audit tunnel of the Upper Trishuli Hydropower Project–1 on the same day, Rijal said.

Following the Bhotekoshi flood, security personnel have intensified search and rescue operations in hydropower projects and surrounding areas to locate those who remain missing.
