Curfew Lifted in Inaruwa, Remains in Dewanganj and Harinagar; Harmony Rally Planned

 


Kathmandu, July 28 — Authorities have lifted the curfew imposed in parts of Inaruwa, Sunsari, as the security situation has gradually improved. The decision was made to restore normalcy and ensure smooth traffic movement along the East-West Highway.

According to Assistant Chief District Officer Poshan Lamichhane, the curfew has been removed from the border areas of Inaruwa Municipality Wards 3 and 6, the Koshi Barrage Bridge, and sections of the Mahendra Highway. However, the curfew remains in force in Dewanganj and Harinagar Rural Municipalities due to ongoing security concerns.

The Nepal Army continued security patrols in the affected areas on Tuesday morning as authorities maintained heightened vigilance despite the improving situation.

Following an all-party meeting held on Monday, local leaders agreed to work toward restoring peace. As part of the initiative, harmony rallies are scheduled to take place in several locations on Tuesday to promote communal unity.

The unrest began on Sunday night after clashes between two communities in Kaptanganj, Ward No. 3 of Dewanganj Rural Municipality. One person was killed after being struck by police gunfire, while more than a dozen others were injured. Despite the curfew, protests continued throughout Monday in Dewanganj, Kaptanganj, Harinagar, Bhutaha, Inaruwa, Laukahi, and Bhokraha, with demonstrations also spreading to Biratnagar, Janakpur, and Rajbiraj.

Meanwhile, a high-level investigation committee formed by Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs has arrived in Biratnagar to probe the violence. Led by Bhupendra Thapa, the committee has visited the incident site and met injured victims receiving treatment at Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar. Investigators have also begun recording statements from victims and eyewitnesses while collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
