One Killed in Police Firing After Violent Clash in Sunsari, Indefinite Curfew Imposed

 


Biratnagar, July 27 — A 24-year-old man was killed after police opened fire to control a violent clash between two groups in Kaptanganj of Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, late Sunday night. Sixteen people, including protesters and police personnel, were injured in the incident, prompting authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in five market areas.


According to police, the dispute began when a group of youths was heading toward the Saptakoshi River for the Bolbam pilgrimage on the holy Monday of the Nepali month of Shrawan while playing loud music on a DJ system. Another group objected to the late-night noise, and the argument quickly escalated into a violent clash.


Police initially used tear gas and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd. When the situation failed to come under control, officers opened fire.


The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta of Kaptanganj. He sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar, where he died during treatment.


Eight protesters were injured in the clash, most of them with gunshot wounds, and are receiving treatment at various hospitals, including Koshi Hospital and Birat Nursing Home.


Eight police personnel, including Inspector Rakesh Rai, were also injured. Rai suffered a head injury, while the remaining officers sustained injuries during the violence.


Police said the clash also resulted in vandalism and arson, damaging houses, medical shops, vehicles, and other properties in the Kaptanganj market area.


Following the incident, the Sunsari District Administration Office imposed an indefinite curfew from 7:00 a.m. Monday in the market areas of Harinagara, Bhutaha, Kaptanganj, Ghuski, and Dewanganj. The curfew prohibits movement, public gatherings, rallies, and meetings until further notice.


Authorities have deployed additional security forces in the affected areas and urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading rumors, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Police said an investigation into the incident is underway.
