Moneylenders Protest in Janakpur, Warn of Singha Durbar Siege from Bhadra 1

 


Janakpurdham, August 7 — Moneylenders in Nepal's Madhesh Province staged a protest in Janakpurdham on Friday, expressing dissatisfaction with the government's nine-point agreement reached with the victims of usury (meter interest) and the related Cabinet decision.

The demonstration, organized by the Victims' Financial Transaction Struggle Committee, demanded that the government immediately revoke what the protesters described as unilateral decisions made without consulting all stakeholders.

Participants from all eight districts of Madhesh Province marched through the streets of Janakpurdham before gathering outside the District Police Office, the District Administration Office, and the Dhanusha District Court.

Committee Chair Vijay Yadav warned that the protest movement would intensify if the government failed to address their demands. He announced that protesters would travel to Kathmandu from Bhadra 1 (mid-August) to lay siege to Singha Durbar, Nepal's main administrative complex, and stage a sit-in at Maitighar Mandala.

During the protest, demonstrators chanted slogans calling for the rule of law and urged the government to convene a tripartite dialogue involving all concerned parties to seek a long-term solution to disputes related to financial transactions.
