Progressive Front Unveils 28-Point Vision Calling for Constitutional Rewrite and Greater Provincial Autonomy

 

Kathmandu — The eight-party Progressive Front has unveiled a 28-point political vision calling for the rewriting of the Constitution, stronger provincial governments and greater autonomy for provinces.

Former minister and leader of the Progressive Democratic Party, Janardan Sharma, unveiled the Front’s political concept at an event held on Saturday to formally announce the alliance.

The Front has proposed amending, revising or rewriting provisions of the Constitution that it considers inadequate or flawed to make the federal democratic republican system more effective. It has also called for political stability, equal representation, inclusive democracy, social justice, and reforms to the judicial and electoral systems.

The alliance has proposed strengthening provincial governments and placing local governments under provincial jurisdiction. It has called for providing local governments with the necessary authority, resources and capacity while adopting the principles of autonomous and self-governing provinces and shared governance at the federal level.

Focus on Youth Employment and Technology

Youth employment, social security, entrepreneurship and the use of technology have been identified as major priorities of the Front.

The alliance has proposed utilizing the skills, capital and technology of Nepalis returning from foreign employment for national development and economic growth.

Under the concept of a “Digital Nepal,” the Front aims to connect young people with technology and promote artificial intelligence, startups and research.

Emphasis on Inclusive and Productive Economy

The Progressive Front has stressed the development of a productive and inclusive economy to reduce economic inequality.

It has proposed strengthening social security programs for low-income groups, workers, farmers and senior citizens.

The Front has also pledged to ensure wider access to education, healthcare and public services as part of its vision for building a welfare-oriented state. It has called for fair wages and safe working conditions to protect workers’ rights.

Joint Mechanism Proposed to Address Squatter Settlements

The Front has said the long-standing problems of squatters and unplanned settlements should be addressed through a scientific and humane approach.

It has proposed establishing a joint mechanism involving the federal, provincial and local governments to distinguish genuine squatters from land mafias and resolve the issue accordingly.

Foreign Policy Based on Equality and Mutual Respect

On foreign policy, the Front has said Nepal’s sovereignty and national interests should remain at the center of its diplomatic approach.

It has proposed strengthening relations with neighboring countries on the basis of equality, mutual respect and national interest.

According to Sharma, the 28-point vision has been introduced as the Front’s future political direction in response to Nepal’s current political situation, with the objectives of protecting the federal democratic republic and improving citizens’ living standards.
