27 Killed in Two Separate Shootings in South Africa

At least 27 people have been killed and 26 others injured in two separate shooting incidents in South Africa, according to police.

In the first incident, 17 people were killed when gunmen opened fire at a bar in the western part of Johannesburg late Saturday night. Police said the victims included 13 men and four women. Fifteen other people were injured in the attack.

According to police, around eight armed attackers entered the bar and searched several customers before taking some of their mobile phones. The suspects then fled in two unidentified vehicles.

The attackers reportedly set fire to the two vehicles before escaping. Police said the motive for the shooting has not yet been established. Investigators and specialized police teams have been deployed to identify and arrest those involved.

Meanwhile, another shooting occurred early Sunday at an entertainment venue in a township outside Cape Town. Ten people were killed and 11 others injured in that incident.

South Africa has long faced serious challenges involving gun violence, with gang disputes and competition among informal businesses contributing to such incidents. Both legally owned and illegal firearms are widely present in the country.

With a population of around 62 million, South Africa has one of the world's higher homicide rates. Authorities have previously deployed the military to assist police in crime-ridden areas of Johannesburg.
