Kathmandu, September 14. The Supreme Court administration has rejected a petition seeking to halt the general conventions being organized separately by the factions led by Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa and former President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Advocate Maniram Upadhyay, who is also an active member of the Nepali Congress, had filed the petition on Monday, seeking an order to stop the conventions planned by the Thapa and Deuba factions.
However, the Supreme Court administration refused to register the petition and returned it. Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala said the petition was rejected because another case related to the dispute over the party’s legitimacy is already under consideration by the court.
The central working committee led by Thapa has decided to hold the Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention in Kathmandu from October 2 to 5. Meanwhile, the Deuba faction has announced plans to hold its convention from December 7 to 9.
Earlier, former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka had also filed a petition seeking an interim order to stop the general convention being organized by the Thapa-led working committee. The Supreme Court had refused to issue an interim order in that case.
The dispute over the official legitimacy of the Nepali Congress is still under consideration by the Supreme Court. Earlier, the court had upheld the Election Commission’s decision recognizing the Thapa-led central working committee formed through the special general convention.
Deuba and Khadka subsequently filed a review petition challenging that decision. The Supreme Court has allowed the review, paving the way for a fresh hearing on the dispute over the official legitimacy of the Nepali Congress.
