67 Doctors at Narayani Hospital Resign En Masse, Cite Insecurity and Administrative Misconduct

 


Kathmandu, July 28: A total of 67 doctors at Narayani Hospital have submitted a collective resignation, alleging that they no longer feel safe working at the hospital after an attack on medical staff and what they describe as mistreatment by local authorities.

According to Dr. Uday Narayan Singh, the resignations were submitted to Medical Superintendent Dr. Chitranjan Sah. He said signatures from the remaining doctors are still being collected and that more resignations are expected.

Dr. Singh stated that the doctors had participated in discussions with the district administration and police in hopes of restoring a safe environment and resuming medical services following Saturday's attack on hospital staff. However, he claimed that instead of receiving support, the doctors were detained for several hours, verbally abused, and treated like criminals.

"We went to the meeting to create an environment where we could return to treating patients after the attack on us. Instead, we were held for two to three hours and subjected to insulting behaviour. We no longer feel safe, which is why we decided to resign collectively," Dr. Singh said.

The protesting doctors have also demanded the resignation of the district's Chief District Officer (CDO) and Superintendent of Police (SP), accusing them of mishandling the incident and failing to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.

Following the mass resignation, emergency services at Narayani Hospital have been completely suspended, raising serious concerns about access to emergency healthcare for patients in the region.

The dispute comes amid growing tension between medical professionals and local authorities over the handling of the attack on hospital staff, with doctors insisting that their safety must be guaranteed before they return to work.
