Karnali Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel Resigns Ahead of No-Confidence Motion

 


Surkhet, July 25 — Karnali Province Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel has resigned from his post while addressing a meeting of the Provincial Assembly on Saturday.

A no-confidence motion against Kandel had been registered in the Provincial Assembly on July 16 (Shrawan calendar equivalent) by 16 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress and the CPN. The Assembly meeting was convened on Saturday afternoon to discuss the motion, but Kandel announced his resignation before the debate began.

The political crisis had intensified after four ministers from the coalition partner Nepali Congress resigned from the Karnali provincial government on July 15, leaving the government in a weakened position.

Addressing the Assembly, Kandel said that holding on to power was never his priority and that the position of Chief Minister was not more important than the interests of the province.

Yamalal Kandel was appointed Chief Minister of Karnali Province on April 9, 2024 (Chaitra 27, 2080 BS). His resignation has paved the way for the formation of a new provincial government.
