Nepal Blocks Over 223,000 Illegal Betting Websites and Apps, Government Says

 


Kathmandu, July 24 — The Government of Nepal has intensified its crackdown on illegal online betting and illicit financial transactions, blocking more than 223,000 websites and mobile applications linked to such activities.

According to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), a total of 223,568 betting websites and apps have been blocked since the start of the FIFA World Cup as part of a nationwide campaign against online gambling and digital financial crimes.

The action follows the government's 100-Point Governance Reform Action Plan, introduced on March 26, which identified online betting, scamming, and illegal digital transactions as priority areas. Under the plan, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology was tasked with shutting down betting-related websites and apps within 24 hours of their identification.

Officials said many blocked platforms have repeatedly resurfaced under new domain names and web addresses, making continuous monitoring and enforcement necessary.

Om Prakash Mahato, Assistant Director and Engineer at the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, said Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were deployed to work closely with the regulator throughout the World Cup to identify and block suspicious websites in real time.

He explained that although specific URLs are blocked in coordination with ISPs, new websites continue to emerge, requiring constant surveillance. The authority is using threat intelligence tools to detect newly created betting platforms and block them as quickly as possible.

The government says it will continue strengthening its efforts to curb online betting, cyber scams, and other illegal digital financial activities across the country.
