Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike After Agreement


 

Kathmandu, July 24 — Indian social activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike following talks with the government and an agreement on certain conditions.

The hunger strike was called off in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders of the Leh-Ladakh Apex Body.

Announcing the decision on X (formerly Twitter), Wangchuk said he chose to end the fast after extensive discussions, a conditional agreement, and concerns over the possibility of violence in the country. He added that he would soon release a separate video explaining the details of the agreement.

Wangchuk also appealed to the public to remain peaceful and ensure that no violence occurs anywhere while the movement continues through dialogue.

Earlier, 65 Members of Parliament from different political parties had jointly urged him to end his hunger strike.

The protest is linked to the alleged NEET-UG examination paper leak, which has triggered nationwide demonstrations by students. Protesters have been gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for nearly a month, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 26 days in solidarity with the students' movement. With the fast now ending, the protest is expected to enter a new phase focused on dialogue and negotiations.
