178 Bodies Recovered Along Riverbanks in Chitwan Following Devastating Floods

Chitwan, August 28 — A total of 178 bodies have been recovered along the Trishuli and Narayani rivers in Chitwan following the devastating floods in Rasuwa.

The recovered bodies are being taken to Bharatpur Hospital, where they are cleaned, photographed and tagged before being placed in body bags and transferred to a designated body preservation and identification centre.

According to Chitwan District Police Office Chief Superintendent of Police Rameshwar Paudel, the recovered bodies include 74 men, 41 women, six boys and two girls.

In addition, body parts belonging to 55 people have been recovered. Of these, 22 have been transferred to the identification centre, while the remaining body parts are being cleaned and preserved at Bharatpur Hospital.

Photos being displayed to help identify victims

Police have begun displaying photographs of the recovered bodies to assist families in identifying missing relatives.

SP Paudel said relatives of missing people can view the photographs and help establish the identities of the victims. The photographs will also be uploaded to the Nepal Police portal to make the identification process easier.

Police are also completing legal documentation for some of the bodies recovered from the rivers.

Old building converted into identification centre

An old building of the Industrial Enterprise Development Institute, located near Bharatpur Hospital in Bharatpur Metropolitan City–10 and beside the Chitwan Chamber of Industries, has been converted into a temporary body preservation and identification centre.

The facility was established because Bharatpur Hospital did not have enough space to accommodate the large number of bodies recovered from the rivers.

Authorities said people claiming the bodies will have to provide identification documents and other necessary paperwork to verify their relationship with the deceased.

Once a body is formally identified, it will be taken back to Bharatpur Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to the family.

Search operations continue

Search teams from the Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force continued searching along the Chitwan sections of the Trishuli and Narayani riverbanks from early Friday morning.

Police said local residents and families of missing people have also continued notifying security agencies whenever bodies are spotted along the riverbanks.
