Chitwan — A total of 229 unidentified bodies recovered in Chitwan following the devastating floods will be buried after collecting and preserving DNA samples, authorities said.
The decision was taken after the bodies and human remains kept along riverbanks and at holding centers began decomposing and emitting foul odors, raising concerns about the possible spread of infections and epidemics.
According to the District Administration Office, the measure became necessary to prevent further health risks based on assessments and recommendations from health experts. Of the 233 bodies recovered in Chitwan, the identities of 229 have yet to be established.
As per the decision of the Chitwan District Security Committee on Saturday, the bodies will be managed in accordance with the “Unidentified and Unclaimed Bodies Management (First Amendment) Directive, 2083.” DNA samples will be collected from all the bodies and recorded under corresponding identification numbers.
After the DNA samples are collected and the necessary records maintained, the bodies will be buried at an open site in Devghat, located in Bharatpur Metropolitan City–1.
The administration said the decision was taken under an extremely difficult and unavoidable situation. It has urged affected families and other stakeholders to cooperate and coordinate with the authorities in the management process.
The District Administration Office also expressed regret for the difficulties the decision may cause to the families of the victims and apologized for the inconvenience.
