Security Guard Missing After Landslide Buries Hydropower Plant in Myagdi, One Worker Rescued

 


Myagdi: A landslide has buried part of the powerhouse of the 14-megawatt Gharkhola Hydropower Project in Pokharebagar, Annapurna Rural Municipality-6 of Myagdi. One security guard has gone missing, while another worker was rescued in an injured condition.

According to the District Police Office, Myagdi, a dry landslide carrying rocks fell from the Lyasi cliff behind the powerhouse at around 3 a.m. on Monday night. The landslide damaged part of the powerhouse and equipment installed inside it.

The missing security guard has been identified as 55-year-old Dipak Baruwal of Annapurna Rural Municipality-6. Police, the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force personnel, local representatives and residents have been mobilized to search for him, said Sagar Timilsina, information officer at the District Police Office, Myagdi.

A 31-year-old worker, Surendra BK of Gauriganga Municipality-5, was rescued from the site in an injured condition. He received initial treatment and was later referred to the Provincial Hospital in Beni for further treatment.

Following information about the incident, a police team from the Area Police Office in Bhrung Tatopani, Annapurna Rural Municipality-2, reached the site. Search and rescue efforts for the missing security guard are continuing with the involvement of security personnel and local residents.

The landslide, which came down from the upper section of the hillside along with rocks and dry debris, caused significant damage to the powerhouse and its equipment.

As a result of the damage, electricity generation at the Gharkhola Hydropower Project has been halted. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage to the project infrastructure and equipment.
