Thabang Landslide Death Toll Reaches 10, Three Still Missing

 

Rolpa: The death toll from a massive landslide in Thabang Rural Municipality-5 of Rolpa has reached 10, while three people are still missing.

The landslide occurred suddenly on Wednesday night in the Uwa Kotlabara area, burying homes and livestock sheds. Police said five bodies were recovered from the incident site, while another five were found in different locations in Pyuthan after being swept away by floodwaters.

The victims range in age from a five-year-old child to an 85-year-old elderly person.

The bodies recovered at the scene have been identified as 18-year-old Shanti Pun Magar, 60-year-old Kamal Bahadur Pun Magar, 80-year-old Manarkhi Pun Magar, 75-year-old Dal Bahadur Pun Magar and 85-year-old Hastakala Roka Magar.

Five additional bodies were recovered from various locations along the Lungri River in Rolpa and the Madi River in Pyuthan. They have been identified as 38-year-old Jun Kumari Pun Magar, five-year-old Ashok Pun Magar, 80-year-old Bal Bahadur Pun Magar, 66-year-old Mani Pun Magar and 34-year-old Mahendra Gharti.

Three people remain missing, and search and rescue operations are continuing.

Two people who managed to escape the landslide, 22-year-old Himal Pun Magar and 25-year-old Sanjay Gharti Magar, sustained serious injuries. They alerted police about the incident by calling the emergency number after escaping from the affected area.

Both injured men received initial treatment at Sulichaur Primary Health Centre before being transferred to Butwal Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

According to police, the landslide buried nine houses, a mobile shop, two livestock sheds and a church.

Security personnel and local residents have been mobilized to search for those still missing and assist families affected by the disaster.
