Khagaraj Bhatta Appointed Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Province

 


Khagaraj Bhatta, the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), has been appointed Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Province.

Province Chief Nazir Miya appointed Bhatta as the Chief Minister on Friday in accordance with Article 168(2) of the Constitution of Nepal, according to the Office of the Province Chief.

Under Article 168(2), a Chief Minister can be appointed with the support of two or more political parties when no single party has a clear majority in the provincial assembly.

Bhatta has secured the support of the CPN-UML to form the provincial government.

The 53-member Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly requires the support of at least 27 lawmakers to form a government. The Nepali Communist Party has 20 lawmakers, while the CPN-UML has 11, giving Bhatta the backing of 31 lawmakers in total.

Following his appointment, Bhatta is expected to begin the process of forming the new provincial government.
