Prime Minister Balendra Shah has urged the public to remain highly alert as several parts of the country are expected to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming days.
Prime Minister Shah said the government has intensified preparations across ministries and subordinate agencies to reduce the risks associated with adverse weather conditions. In a social media post, he said rainfall has been reported in different parts of the country and that the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in some areas from September 25 to 27.
According to Shah, all 77 Chief District Officers have been instructed to maintain a high level of preparedness. Meetings of district security committees have also been held, with the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force placed on standby for possible disaster response.
Security personnel have been conducting public awareness campaigns through loudspeakers in settlements along rivers and other vulnerable areas. Preparations have also been made to mobilize personnel and equipment for possible flooding, landslides and riverbank erosion.
The prime minister has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel on highways, particularly at night, and to postpone long-distance journeys whenever possible. Authorities have also been instructed to prevent nighttime vehicle movement along high-risk road sections.
A “stop, wait and watch” approach has been introduced at highway security checkpoints. Vehicles will be allowed to proceed only after the safety of the road section ahead has been confirmed through coordination with the next checkpoint.
Authorities have also arranged excavators, loaders, bulldozers and other heavy equipment near vulnerable road sections so they can be deployed quickly in case of floods, landslides or river erosion.
Shah said all Road Division Offices have been directed to remain operational around the clock and regularly publish updated information on whether roads are open or blocked.
He urged citizens to stay informed about weather conditions and take necessary precautions alongside the preparedness measures being carried out by government agencies.
