Kathmandu, September 22-A powerful low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to begin affecting Nepal from Wednesday, bringing increased rainfall across several parts of the country. The Meteorological Forecasting Division has urged the public to remain alert as the system is expected to strengthen and move northwestward.
According to a special weather bulletin issued by the division on Tuesday evening, the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression. Its influence is expected to increase rainfall in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces from Wednesday.
From Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27, some areas of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Extremely heavy rainfall is also possible at one or two locations.
Some parts of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim provinces may also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. A few areas of Karnali province are also likely to receive heavy rainfall.
The weather division has warned that the expected rainfall could increase the risk of soil erosion, floods, landslides and debris flows. Urban and Tarai areas could face inundation, while water levels in major and minor rivers, streams and rivulets may rise.
The adverse weather could affect daily life, agriculture, health, tourism, road and air transportation, as well as construction activities along river corridors.
As farmers are currently harvesting paddy, the division has advised them to monitor weather information and consult agricultural experts before proceeding with harvesting activities.
Heavy snowfall is also possible in mountainous areas due to the weather system. The division has therefore urged mountaineers and others in the affected areas to exercise extra caution.
