Doctors Suspend Nationwide Protest After Five-Point Agreement with Government

 


Kathmandu, July 29 — Doctors across Nepal have suspended their nationwide protest after reaching a five-point agreement with the government, paving the way for the gradual resumption of regular hospital services.

The agreement was reached during talks held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Health and Food Safety. The agreement was signed by Health Secretary Bikash Devkota, Ministry of Law Secretary Parashwar Dhungana, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Secretary Narayan Prasad Sharma Duwadi, and Nepal Medical Association President Dr. Badri Rijal.

The protest was triggered by the assault on Dr. Pramod Ram, a physician at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj, Parsa. Dr. Ram is currently receiving treatment at the National Trauma Center in Kathmandu.

In response to the incident, doctors across the country had halted all non-emergency medical services for two days under the call of the Nepal Medical Association, demanding stronger protection for healthcare professionals and action against those responsible for the attack.

The protesting doctors also demanded legal action against those involved in the assault, the transfer of the Parsa Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) accused of mistreating doctors during negotiations, and concrete measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals.

Following the government's commitment to address these demands, both sides signed a five-point agreement, leading the Nepal Medical Association to suspend all protest programs.

Regular hospital services, which had been disrupted by the protest, are now expected to resume across the country.
