Mangal Bahadur Shahi Sworn in as Karnali Province Chief Minister

 


Surkhet, July 29 — Newly appointed Karnali Province Chief Minister Mangal Bahadur Shahi was sworn into office on Wednesday during a ceremony held at the Office of the Provincial Head in Birendranagar.

Provincial Head Yagya Raj Joshi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shahi, who was appointed as the fifth Chief Minister of Karnali Province under Article 168(2) of Nepal's Constitution on Tuesday.

Shahi, who also serves as the parliamentary leader of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP), secured the position with the backing of the NCP and the CPN-UML.

In the 40-member Karnali Provincial Assembly, at least 21 lawmakers are required to form a majority government. The NCP and CPN-UML together hold 24 seats, giving the coalition a comfortable majority.

Shahi's appointment follows a power-sharing agreement reached on July 25 between CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Nepal Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda." Under the agreement, the leadership of the Karnali provincial government was allocated to the NCP.

Acting on the recommendation of the parliamentary leaders of the NCP and CPN-UML, Provincial Head Yagya Raj Joshi formally appointed Shahi as Chief Minister. With the oath-taking ceremony completed, he has officially assumed leadership of the Karnali Provincial Government.
