Indefinite Curfew Leaves Sunsari Deserted After Violent Clash

 


Biratnagar, July 29 — An indefinite curfew imposed in Sunsari district following a violent clash in Kaptanganj of Dewanganj Rural Municipality has left major markets, the Koshi Highway, and surrounding areas deserted on Wednesday morning.

The District Administration Office, Sunsari, enforced the curfew after incidents of violence, stone-pelting, arson, and threats to public security. The order was issued under Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028, following a decision by the District Security Committee.

Chief District Officer Ishwari Prasad Aryal said the curfew will remain in effect until further notice. Movement of people, public gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, meetings, and protests have been completely prohibited in the designated areas. Authorities have warned that anyone violating the order will face legal action.

The curfew covers Ward Nos. 16 and 17 of Itahari Sub-metropolitan City along a 200-meter stretch on both sides of the Mahendra Highway, Ward Nos. 1 and 5 of Ramdhuni Municipality, as well as the entire areas of Inaruwa, Duhabi, Bhokraha Narsingh, Koshi, Gadhi, Dewanganj, Harinagar, and Barju rural municipalities.

The violence erupted late Tuesday night after a clash between two groups in Kaptanganj. Although incidents of arson and property damage were reported, authorities have not yet released an official assessment of the losses.

Meanwhile, Nepal Police have urged the public not to believe or share misleading images circulating on social media that falsely claim to show attacks involving sharp weapons.

Since the curfew came into effect, security has been significantly tightened across Sunsari, with Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, the Nepal Army, and other security agencies deployed throughout major markets, highways, and sensitive locations.
