PM Balen Addresses the Nation, Urges Unity and Calm; Briefs President on Security Situation



Kathmandu, July 30: Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) has appealed to the public to remain calm, maintain communal harmony, national unity, and brotherhood as the government responds to tensions reported in several districts across the country.

In a 4-minute and 28-second address to the nation delivered in both Nepali and Maithili on Thursday, Prime Minister Shah expressed sorrow over the recent incidents in Dewanganj of Sunsari and parts of Siraha. He paid tribute to the deceased — Jayaprakash Mehta, Omprakash Mehta, and Ganesh Yadav — and extended condolences to their families while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

The Prime Minister said the government is committed to conducting a fair and impartial investigation into the incidents and ensuring strict legal action against those found responsible. He informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs has already formed an investigation committee, emphasizing that no one responsible would be spared, regardless of their position or affiliation.

Shah stated that security agencies have been mobilized to prevent further violence and maintain law and order. He added that an all-party meeting had been convened at the federal level, while local representatives, civil society members, religious leaders, and community representatives were continuously engaging in dialogue to restore peace.

He also said that the Home Minister and senior security officials had been dispatched to the affected areas, and that the National Security Council had already held a meeting and taken necessary decisions regarding the situation.

During his address, the Prime Minister urged citizens not to spread or believe unverified information, rumors, hate speech, or content that could incite communal tension through social media or any other platform. He requested everyone to rely only on official information released by government authorities.

Shah stressed that protecting the lives and property of citizens and preserving social harmony are the government's highest responsibilities. He warned that authorities would take strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace, spread unrest, or undermine communal harmony.

Referring to Nepal's Constitution, he noted that every citizen has the fundamental right to practice their religion, culture, and traditions freely. He emphasized that no religion promotes violence, hatred, or division, and cautioned against blaming an entire community or encouraging retaliation based on isolated incidents.

"Our history has shown that even in the most difficult times, unity, tolerance, and wisdom have been our greatest strengths," the Prime Minister said, urging citizens, political parties, media organizations, civil society, and religious communities to work together in maintaining national unity and peace.

He concluded his address by delivering the final section in the Maithili language, emphasizing inclusiveness and solidarity.

PM Briefs President on Security Situation

Shortly after the national address, Prime Minister Shah met with President Ram Chandra Paudel at Shital Niwas.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister briefed the President on the security situation in Sunsari, Siraha, and other affected districts, as well as the government's ongoing efforts to restore peace and order. He informed the President that the Nepal Army, along with other security agencies, had been deployed in parts of the Tarai-Madhesh region to prevent further violence.

President Paudel urged the government to restore normalcy at the earliest, maintain law and order, and resolve the situation through cooperation with all political parties and stakeholders. He also called on the government to ensure that citizens can return to living in a peaceful and secure environment as soon as possible.
