Former Prime Minister Deuba Returning to Nepal Today After Five and a Half Months

 


Former Prime Minister and former president of the Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba, is returning to Nepal today, Thursday, after staying abroad for around five and a half months.

Deuba is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu this afternoon from Thailand along with his wife, former foreign minister Arzu Rana Deuba. According to Nepali Congress leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Deuba will land in Kathmandu at around 12:30 p.m. on a Thai Airways flight.

Deuba had initially planned to return to Nepal on the night of August 11. However, his arrival was postponed by two days as returning late at night was considered inconvenient for a public welcome.

Deuba left Nepal for Singapore on February 25 for medical treatment. His wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, who was in India at the time, also traveled to Singapore for treatment. The couple later reportedly went to Hong Kong for further medical care. Since then, their whereabouts had not been publicly disclosed.

During the Gen Z protests last year, Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha was set on fire, and the couple was also attacked during the incident. After receiving treatment in Nepal for some time, they traveled abroad for further medical treatment.

While the Deuba couple was abroad, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police issued arrest warrants against them in connection with a money-laundering investigation.

However, the Supreme Court later issued an interim order preventing their immediate arrest after a writ petition was filed seeking to halt the arrest warrants.

Deuba is returning to Nepal at a time when dissatisfaction within the Nepali Congress has been growing. The Deuba faction of the party is preparing to hold a national gathering in Kathmandu from August 14 to 16. An organizing committee has been formed under the leadership of former General Secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala.

The national gathering is scheduled to be inaugurated at Miracle Party Palace in Sukedhara. Deuba’s return just ahead of the gathering is being closely watched within the Nepali Congress, particularly amid growing internal differences in the party.
