Police Raid Jan Aastha Weekly Office Morning After Editor Kishor Shrestha’s Arrest

Kathmandu: Police raided the office of Jan Aastha Weekly in Lalitpur on Thursday morning, a day after its editor and publisher, Kishor Shrestha, was arrested.

The police raided the weekly’s office at Thadodhunga in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, early Thursday morning.

Kathmandu Police Chief SSP Dilli Ghimire said the office was searched on the basis of information that some documents related to the case could be there.

Shrestha was arrested by police on Wednesday night near his residence in Lalitpur. A joint team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and Kathmandu District Police Range arrested him on charges related to violation of personal privacy.

Police had obtained an arrest warrant from the court against Shrestha before taking him into custody.

Shrestha, who is the publisher and editor of Jan Aastha Weekly and Jan Aastha.com, has been accused of publishing a photograph showing Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amarkant Chaudhary kissing a young woman.

The woman had filed a complaint with Kathmandu Police, alleging that her personal privacy had been violated after the photograph was made public.

Shrestha is also a former acting chairperson of the Press Council Nepal.

Police searched the office for relevant documents and other materials. However, authorities have not yet disclosed what, if anything, was seized during the raid.
