Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, Tsunami Waves Recorded

 


Kathmandu: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the offshore area of eastern Indonesia early Saturday morning, with tsunami waves of less than one meter recorded in some coastal areas.

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 4:58 a.m. local time at a depth of around 15 kilometers. Several aftershocks were reported following the main tremor.

The earthquake was felt strongly for nearly a minute in areas including Nagekeo and Bima. Local residents reportedly rushed out of their homes and moved toward safer locations following the tremors.

Dodi Yuleova, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake due to the potential risk of tsunami waves. BMKG reported that waves measuring less than one meter were recorded in several areas.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Tsunami Warning Centre said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to mainland Australia, its islands, or other territories.

Indonesia is one of the countries most vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis. The country lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an active seismic zone where powerful earthquakes occur frequently.
